Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time

Long, long ago, three Goddesses descended from the heavens and created the land of Hyrule. Din, with her fiery arms gave shape to it; Nayru, with her wisdom gave law to it; and Farore, with her rich soul gave life to it. When they returned to the heavens, they left behind them the golden TriForce, a sacred object that could both reflect and magnify the inner strength of any who wield it. It became a symbol for the people of Hyrule, who built their kingdom around it’s location. A sacred kingdom.

However, as ages passed, the Hyrulians began to covet the power for themselves, and soon wars were waged between them, each trying to take the power for themselves. Many died. The great castle of Hyrule burned in final battle, and amidst it all, one man, who was known by his followers as the King of Red Lions, rose up and created peace once more. The TriForce is neither a tool nor weapon to wielded by man, he told the people, but a symbol of power, wisdom and courage, a symbol of Hyrule’s prosperity. The people of Hyrule heard his words, and peace returned. The TriForce remained hidden, the King of Red Lions became king of all Hyrule, as his father had been before the wars, and his father before him. No one took notice of the forest.

Deep within the wood, where the innocent fairy people known as Kokiri dwelled under the guidance of the Great Deku Tree, a Hyrulian mother, who had fled from the castle as it burned, died quietly beneath the ancient tree, leaving behind her baby boy. The Great Deku Tree told his people to take the boy into their midst and raise him as their own, to honor his mother’s last request. They would call him Link.

Chapter 1 - The Fairy Boy

I opened my eyes to see the whitewashed ceiling above me. ‘What a strange dream.’ I thought to myself. Why should I dream about a boy living in the forest? No one but the Kokiri lived there, and they were more strict than the Gerudo about whom they allowed into their midst.

“It’s time to get up, Hyalei!” I heard my twin sister call just as she opened the door to the bedroom we shared. “You overslept again!”

“Sorry, Malon.” I managed as I got out of bed. “I was having weird dreams again.”
Malon, even though technically she was younger than me by a few minutes, was the most “together” of the family, and pretty much ran the ranch on her own, even though she was only eleven. “Again? Well, it can’t be helped; you eat breakfast while I re-awaken Dad. He fell asleep while feeding his Cuccos.”

I nodded. “Why am I not surprised?”

I listened to Malon chastising Dad as I dressed and brushed my long, brown hair and ate a Malon-prepared breakfast of scrambled Cucco eggs and milk. Once ready to face the day, I went downstairs and said hi to Dad, who was back to feeding the numerous white fowl that filled the main part of our farmhouse. Once outside, I took a moment to breathe in the fresh Hyrulian air before making my way to the horse pen, where Malon was already singing to Epona, her beloved filly.
I, on the other hand, went to Epona’s brother, Epon, and gave him a carrot from my pocket.

“Good morning, Epon.” I greeted the colt, stroking his crimson mane. He was the exact opposite of Epona in colouring, and the most beautiful horse in the world in my opinion. A bit of a temper, though..

“Malon, Hyalei,” Dad called to us. “I have an errand to run in Hyrule castle, would you girls like to come with me?”

Malon and I looked at each other in excitement before readily agreeing. Trips to Castle Town, though not scarce, were quite the treat for us. Malon enjoyed the chance to restock our pantry and buy more fabric to patch up our clothes (she was far too mature, if you ask me) and I lived for the simple joy of roaming the cobblestone streets and listening to the gossip of travelers.

The trek across Hyrule Field was short as we sat in the back of the milk wagon, but it was beautiful nonetheless. Over the drawbridge and into the market place of Hyrule Castle Town, with the hustle and bustle and the bright colours of the people’s clothing and the scent of the wares being sold. Dad went off to the castle itself while Malon looked through the various stalls. I on the other hand, had another destination.

After making sure Malon wasn’t watching me, I snuck off to the Temple of Time.

The towering cathedral was the most beautiful, enchanting place I’d ever seen, full of mystery and charm. To some it might seem imposing, with the dark stone and looming towers, but I thought it to be more beautiful than the castle itself.

Pushing open the doors, I slipped into the ancient gateway to the Sacred Realm, where it was whispered that the mighty TriForce dwelled.

Sunlight streamed in through the high, stained glass windows, filling the large room with a soft glow. In the center of the path, a low dais engraved with TriForce symbol stood, and I carefully walked around it, just in case. At the end of the room was a wall different from the rest. Upon it was carved the Temple’s sacred symbol. It was the Door of Time. The sealed entrance to the world where the TriForce was created.

Slowly I climbed the stairs until I was face to face with the Door. Every night for the past year, (with the exception of last night) I had dreamt of this door. Night after night, I had walked up to it, as I did now, and placed my hand upon it.

Now, I was actually here. Perhaps my dream truly meant something? Slowly I raised my hand, and then placed it upon the cold stone, closing my eyes.

At first, nothing happened, and then I felt strange, like the world beneath my hand and feet was no longer there, and I was in a place where only the soul could exist. It was then that I felt another hand against my own. Startled, I opened my eyes, but only had time to stare into a pair of scarlet orbs before the physical world once more fell down upon me.

I stood there in shock for a long while, trying to figure out what had just transpired.

Who had I seen? How had we possibly connected? Pressing my hand harder against the Door, I leaned forward until my nose brushed against the rough stone, it’s earthy scent filling my lungs.

“Who are you?” I breathed.

But no matter how I tried, I could not touch that place again, and I left the Temple once more, feeling a strange mixture of emotions. Awe that it had happened; curiosity about what it meant and who the person I had seen was, and wonder about why it had happened to me of all people.

Once outside, I looked around me, noticing something was different. I realized with a jolt that it was sunset, and that Malon was going to be furious.

“Gah!!” I shrieked in horror, clutching my head in shock. “How did it get so late?!?!” I took off pell mell for the market, hoping Malon wouldn’t be so mad as to take away my dinner.

To my relief, I wasn’t the only one lost. Turns out Dad has been missing as long as I have. Probably fell asleep, the old fool.

“I spoke to a young boy with strange green clothes who was on his way to the castle as well.” Malon filled me in. “He said he would find Dad for me. But anyway, where have you been all this time?”

I considered telling her about my encounter, and the dreams leading up to it, but in the end decided not to. She’d only think I was insane. Well..she did already, but I needn’t add oil to the fire.

So, I chuckled sheepishly and scratched the back of my head. “Well, I went to the Temple of Time, and, um, I guess I fell asleep.. Heh heh..”

Malon sighed. “Typical. Oh, look there he comes now!”

I turned to see Dad running down the street, looking as frightened of Malon’s scolding as I had been.

When he skidded to a halt before us, he bent over and panted while apologizing profusely. “So-so sorry, Malon, dear. I got tired, and sat down under a tree just needing a few Zs, but it seems I slept longer than I should have..”

Malon sighed. “Well, it’s alright. Let’s just get home before the gates close.”

The rest of the evening I was quiet, trying to understand what had happened to me in the Temple of Time. To me it had seemed I’d only been in there for a few minutes, but in reality it had been hours. Perhaps in those seemingly few moments, I had become caught in time itself? However, the real question was, is there someone else trapped in that strange world?

I went to bed, still feeling uneasy. Would the dream come back? Or would it be different, now that it had been fulfilled? My worry kept me up (Dad’s snoring didn’t help) and the sky was lightening when sleep finally took me.

In the dream I stood in a garden courtyard, and I could feel that there was someone standing with his back against mine, but no matter how I tried, I could not turn to see who it was.

For a long while, we just stood there. It was peaceful, somehow. The flowers smelled sweet, and the sun was warm upon my head. I felt the stranger’s fingers slip through mine, and for some reason I smiled, and knew he was smiling, too.

Then I woke up.

It was late, as usual, but for once I wasn’t worried about what Malon would say. I went about my chores quietly, still thinking about yesterday. I was sure the person from my dream was the same someone I had glimpsed in the Temple of Time. But who was he really? How could he have gotten into my dreams?

I looked up from my thoughts when Epon nudged me, demanding another carrot. I smiled and rubbed his neck, acquiescing. “Good boy.” I murmured. “Good boy.”

Suddenly Epon looked up from his chewing, and I could almost see the frown on his horsey face. I looked around to see what had put him off, only to find a boy wearing odd green clothing walking towards us. He was short, with blonde hair and bright blue eyes. A fairy was following him around as well. What a strange child. I’d never seen anyone like him. No..I had. That odd dream, about a Hylian boy who lived amongst the Fairy Folk. But that boy hadn’t had a fairy, and there really wasn’t any way to tell if he was Kokiri or Hylian, so this must simply be coincidence.

“Hello,” Malon greeted. “Thank you for waking Dad up yesterday.”

The boy smiled. “No problem.” [ZOMG, Link speaks!!]

Epona, who had been standing nearby, immediately shied away from him and cantered off.

Malon chuckled. “Epona’s very shy, but she likes the song Mother used to sing when she was alive. Would you like me to teach it to you?”

The boy smiled and nodded, pulling out an ocarina and putting it to his lips.
I would have stayed to listen, but Epon was starting to get edgy, so I led him away to the stables, deciding on an outing. After tossing a blanket over Epon’s back, I tied up one side of my skirt so it wouldn’t get in the way and climbed on, double-checking to make sure I had the child-sized bow and arrow set I’d received for my birthday, just in case. When I was sure no one was watching, together we made our way out of the ranch.

Following the road which led to the Gerudo canyon, we climbed up the steep hill
and looked down on the valley. It was one of our favorite places to ride. While Malon had always been content to one day take over ownership of the ranch, it had always been my dream to travel. See the world and everything in it; live off the land and sleep under the sky.

Epon reared back and whinnied with the same enthusiasm I felt surging through me before he took off at full gallop down the slope. I laughed with joy at the wind blowing through my hair. Letting our momentum carry us, we continued to race through the valley, then back again around the Field, watching the birds and various other creatures as Epon slowed to a steady walk. When we reached the gate to the ranch once more, we stood there looking out over the green landscape. It was all so beautiful. I hope it never changes.

As we headed back inside, we passed the oddly clothed boy, who was leaving.

“So, just who are you?” I asked.

He smiled. “I’m Link, from Kokiri Forest.”

I smiled. “I thought so. Is it nice there?”

He nodded. “It’s beautiful.”

“But then what are you doing so far from it? I thought the Kokiri never left the wood.”

“I was sent here by the Great Deku Tree, on a mission to protect Hyrule.”

I blinked. “Protect it? From what?”

His blue eyes hardened. “From the evil lord Ganondorf, of the Gerudo clan of thieves. He aims to take over this land.”

I blinked in shock. Surely that cannot happen! “But then, what can you do about it?”

“I do not know, but I must try.”

I nodded to him, realizing that there was a great deal more to this boy than met the eye. “Good luck to you then, and return to this place if ever you need rest.”

He bowed. “I’m grateful. Take care, then.”

We parted ways, and I wondered just what was to happen to that odd boy.

After that, the days passed slowly. I never dreamt of the stranger again, nor did we see Link, and times were peaceful to the point of boring.

Until one dark day, word came from the castle that Ganondorf, the leader of the Gerudo Thieves, had made his move. The King was dead, Castle Town had burned nearly to the ground, and Princess Zelda had vanished. No one knew where she was, but the worst of it was, Ganondorf had seized control of the throne.

What was to become of us?

That day, I took Epon and rode all over the kingdom, searching for Link, but he was nowhere to be found.

Time passed.

With Ganondorf’s evil reign gripping the kingdom, Kokiri forest became overrun with monsters; Kakariko Village became overpopulated with refugees from Castle Town, which had turned into a cursed graveyard, filled with the undead and lost souls. No one dared go there anymore.

Death Mountain’s volcano became active once more and filled the sky with smoke and flames. The peaceful, rock-eating Gorons fled deeper into the mountain for shelter. No one knew what became of them. The Zora Domain had frozen over, and Lake Hylia had all but dried up. Ingo, our complaining ranch hand, had overthrown Father, who, in his shame, fled to Kakariko Village. Malon and I had stayed behind to care for the animals, but were treated as slaves by the suddenly cruel and insidious Ingo.

After years of such treatment, I could take no more, so I hopped on Epon and galloped away, never to return. I’d tried to get Malon to come with me, but as usual she was the responsible one, and remained at the ranch to care for Epona and the other animals. I would miss her dearly.

I’d been fifteen at the time, and in the two years since then, living upon what had once been an island in the center of Lake Hylia, I’d grown into something of a wild thing. I made my living by catching Poes and selling them to the creepy man who was the only living person still in Castle Town. I also did various other odd jobs, riding all day upon Epon, with my bow and arrows to protect me. Soon it seemed like I’d forgotten my life before. So much had changed, in those seven long years. Fences cut through Hyrule Field, and though the mischievous Skull Kids had been wiped out, bandits roamed freely, robbing and killing anyone unlucky enough to cross paths with them. Everything was dead, dying, or had simply been wiped out during Ganon’s campaign to break the world of it’s will to live. My dreams and the encounter in the Temple of Time were now no more than a distant memory. This was life now, and nothing could be done about it. Ganon had the TriForce, and all the power he needed to crush anyone who dared question him. This was life.
Ah, here it is. My very first public fanfiction. This one started as drabble for the NaNoWriMo, but when it turned into something actually worth posting, I decided to spruce it up and make a "thing" of it, because sequels will be had. I'm already working on a TP one, but I just might do a WW one as well, if the mood strikes.

Yes, this is an OC fanfic, but I swear she's not a Mary-Sue! Also, let it be noted that Sheik is indeed a boy seperate from Zelda, and I have perfectly logical reasoning for that. If you've ever read the manga Thousand Years of Snow, or more importantly the bonus story in chapter 4, called One Second Romance, you'll understand perfectly. If you haven't, I highly suggest you go and read both, because they're really awesome stories. Anyways, for those of you who haven't, I won't spoil it here, because in the next chapter I explain everything, so wait for it.

Sheik is a boy!! My bishi-dar says so, and that's that.

*Cough* So, anyway, I hope you enjoy. Chapter two will probably debut tomorrow, if I don't forget, and don't worry, I do have a good plot in the works. Also, I'm in the process of drawing fanart for this story, but it takes longer to draw something worth looking at than it takes to write something worth reading, so don't hold your breath.

I do not own the Zelda world, or Sheik, or the plotpoint of One Second Romance, or anything of that nature. I do, however, have the rights to Hyalei and the idea behind Epon (I think), as well as the other OC and her plot that's coming up, but I'm not getting paid for it. Don't flame, because that's childish, but constructive criticism is welcome. Be sure to comment!
